A discussion has emerged over whether Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist Asmita Dey qualifies for cash rewards announced by the Uttar Pradesh government, despite her historic achievement as India's first judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal.
The debate centres on the eligibility conditions laid out in the Uttar Pradesh government's sports reward policy and how they apply to athletes who have represented different states during their careers.
Eligibility Questions Raised
Under a government order issued in August 2024, athletes seeking state rewards must satisfy specific eligibility criteria, including being a domicile of Uttar Pradesh, studying in a recognised educational institution in the state for at least two years, or representing Uttar Pradesh in international sporting events.
Since Asmita Dey's permanent residence is in Tripura, questions have been raised over whether she qualifies for the state's incentives despite representing Uttar Pradesh in recent competitions.
Representation for Uttar Pradesh
Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Judo Association have stated that Dey has consistently represented the state in national and international tournaments after joining the Uttar Pradesh Police as a sub-inspector in 2023.
Her achievements while representing Uttar Pradesh include:
- Gold medal at the Senior National Judo Championship.
- Gold medal at the 38th National Games.
- Gold medal at the Casablanca African Open Championship.
- Historic gold medal in the women's 48kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
Based on the existing policy, officials believe she fulfills the provision relating to athletes representing Uttar Pradesh at international events.
Government Reviewing the Matter
Uttar Pradesh Sports Secretary Suhas LY said all eligible athletes will receive benefits under the government's policy and that officials will examine Dey's case before taking a final decision.
The Sports Department is currently preparing the final list of medal winners and participants from the Commonwealth Games who will receive state incentives.
Other Athletes to Receive Rewards
Apart from Dey, distance runner Gulveer Singh is set to receive financial rewards after winning a silver and a bronze medal at the Glasgow Games. Under the state's policy, he is expected to receive a combined cash award of ₹1.25 crore.
Athletes from Uttar Pradesh who participated in the Games but did not win medals are also expected to receive consolation rewards as announced by the state government.
Focus on Reward Policy
The discussion surrounding Asmita Dey has highlighted the challenges governments face in framing sports reward policies as athletes increasingly relocate for employment, training, and competitive opportunities.
Officials have indicated that the final decision will be taken after examining the provisions of the government order and Dey's eligibility under the existing rules.
