Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-day state visit to Seychelles from June 27 to 29 at the invitation of President Dr. Patrick Herminie. The visit comes at a significant time as Seychelles celebrates its 50th National Day, which also marks five decades of diplomatic relations between India and the island nation.
Before departing, the Prime Minister shared a message on X, expressing his enthusiasm about participating in the Golden Jubilee celebrations as the Guest of Honour. He described Seychelles as one of India's trusted maritime partners and highlighted its strategic importance under India's Vision MAHASAGAR initiative. PM Modi also said he looked forward to productive discussions with President Herminie on expanding cooperation between the two countries.
High-Level Bilateral Discussions
During the visit, PM Modi and President Patrick Herminie will hold extensive talks aimed at reviewing the current state of India-Seychelles relations and identifying new areas for collaboration. The meeting follows President Herminie's state visit to India earlier this year and is expected to strengthen cooperation in sectors such as maritime security, development, trade, and regional connectivity.
First Indian Prime Minister to Address Seychelles Parliament
A key highlight of the visit will be PM Modi's address to the National Assembly of Seychelles, making him the first Indian Prime Minister to deliver a speech in the country's Parliament. The address is expected to underscore the democratic values and close parliamentary ties shared by both nations.
Strengthening Maritime Partnership
Maritime cooperation remains one of the central themes of the visit. India regards Seychelles as a vital partner in ensuring security and stability across the Indian Ocean Region. Under the Vision MAHASAGAR framework, both countries are expected to deepen collaboration on maritime safety, regional development, and initiatives supporting the Global South.
Meeting the Indian Community
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to interact with members of the Indian community living in Seychelles. The diaspora has played an important role in strengthening cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries over the years.
Celebrating Five Decades of Friendship
This year's celebrations carry added significance as India and Seychelles commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations. The partnership has grown steadily over the decades, built on mutual trust, democratic principles, and close cooperation across multiple sectors. Officials expect PM Modi's visit to further reinforce the longstanding friendship and open new avenues for collaboration.
