The Ladakh administration has set a September 15 deadline to complete major electricity transmission projects that will bring power grid connectivity to Siachen Base Camp, Zanskar and Nubra for the first time. The initiative is expected to significantly improve power infrastructure across some of the Union Territory's most remote and strategically important regions.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced the development after reviewing Ladakh's power sector, stating that officials have been instructed to ensure the projects are completed before winter sets in.
Major Transmission Lines Underway
The ongoing infrastructure plan includes a 189-kilometre, 220 kV transmission line connecting Drass to Padum and another 79-kilometre, 220 kV line linking Phyang with Diskit. New substations are also being developed across Zanskar, Nubra and Changthang to strengthen the region's electricity network.
These projects are expected to expand reliable power access to remote border areas that have long faced limited electricity infrastructure.
Reliable Electricity for Remote Border Areas
Once operational, the new transmission network will provide continuous electricity to Siachen Base Camp and surrounding regions, reducing dependence on standalone power sources. Officials believe improved electricity supply will support essential services, including healthcare, education, tourism, digital connectivity and local economic activities.
The enhanced infrastructure is also expected to benefit residents living in isolated high-altitude areas by ensuring a more dependable power supply throughout the year.
Reducing Dependence on Diesel Generators
Many remote parts of Ladakh currently rely on diesel generators due to the absence of permanent grid connectivity. The transmission projects, being implemented under the Prime Minister's Development Package (PMDP), aim to replace diesel-based power generation with cleaner and more sustainable electricity.
The move aligns with the government's broader objective of promoting environmentally friendly development and advancing Ladakh's carbon-neutral vision.
Six Districts to Join the Power Grid
According to the Ladakh administration, successful completion of the ongoing projects will connect six of the Union Territory's seven districts to the national power grid. Authorities are racing against time to finish construction before harsh winter conditions make infrastructure work across the mountainous region increasingly difficult.
The expansion of the electricity network is expected to strengthen connectivity, improve living conditions and support long-term development across Ladakh's remote frontier areas.
