Scottish authorities have launched an investigation after several athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games 2026 were reported missing following the conclusion of the tournament in Glasgow. Police Scotland confirmed that inquiries are underway as officials work with the UK Home Office to determine the whereabouts of competitors who did not return home with their national teams.
Police Confirm Missing Athletes
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said reports had been received regarding multiple athletes who remain unaccounted for after the Games ended. Authorities are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the disappearances and coordinating with immigration and border officials.
Four Ugandan Boxers Missing
According to reports, four members of Uganda's six-member boxing squad failed to board their scheduled flight back home. The missing athletes have been identified as Nuhu Batte, Angel Katushabe, Ibrahim Kemis, and Emily Nakalema.
Media reports claim one of the athletes indicated that the group intended to seek asylum in Scotland and continue their boxing careers there, citing improved opportunities and training facilities. Uganda's team management has not officially commented on the reports.
Pakistan Boxer Also Unaccounted For
In a separate incident, Pakistan boxer Qudratullah was reported missing after he failed to join the country's contingent for its return journey. Team officials discovered he was absent from his accommodation before departure.
Officials have described the case as unusual because his passport was reportedly being held by the team's manager when he disappeared. The Pakistan Olympic Association is reportedly looking into the matter alongside relevant authorities.
Similar Incidents in Previous Games
This is not the first time athletes have gone missing after a Commonwealth Games. During the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, two Pakistani boxers were also reported missing under similar circumstances.
Authorities also recorded several cases following the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia, where dozens of athletes and officials allegedly remained in the country after the event, with many reportedly seeking asylum.
Organisers Working with Authorities
Glasgow 2026 organisers said they are continuing to work closely with Police Scotland, Border Force, and UK Visas & Immigration to ensure the safe departure of athletes, officials, and support staff following the conclusion of the Games.
The Commonwealth Games 2026 featured more than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories, with the event concluding after 11 days of competition in Glasgow.
